Houston Astros Update- 6-18-08

Issue #1:
Not too long ago during the 9th inning in which we were down by a couple of runs- 1 out-
Cooper had the runner on 1B try to steal 2B.
The runner was out at 2B.
Blum was up to bat and struck out. Game over.

Issue #2:
The last game of the Yankees series at home on Sunday, three starters were given the "day off"
(even though there was not a game the next day... which would constitue a "day off")
Berkman has maintained that he could have played. Cooper decided to give him 2 days off regardless.

Aside from that fiasco, there were a couple of missed calls by both the HP umpire and the 1B umpire that essentially turned the game completely around for the Yankess- along with a very good play by A-Rod at 3B on a sharply hit ball that would have drove in at least 1 run.
There is no way to know what would have happened if all 3 starters had played in that game.
There is also no way to know what would have happened if the HP umpire had called a 3rd strike instead of what lead to a walk.

Issue #3:
Cooper decides it's a good idea to try to steal when Molina is the catcher (and is in the game solely for defensive purposes)
Which backfires.

Issue #4:
Yesterday during the 7th inning, Cooper brings out Brocail who ends the inning with no runs scored.
Brocail comes out again for the 8th inning and with 2 outs and 2 on base- he PULLS Brocail and bring in the CLOSER, Valverde.
Key word here is the CLOSER. Who typically does not come in until the 9th inning.
Valverde comes in- and gives up the lead in the 8th.
There is no 9th inning for Valverde because he fucked our lead up on a road game.
The moral to this story is- DONT FUCK WITH THE FORMULA!
I am not completely opposed to bringing in Brocail in during the 7th-
but I sure as hell am opposed to bringing Valverde in during the 8th inning.
I trust Brocail in a 2 out, 2 men on situation and not Valverde.
Valverde does not need to inherit runners on base.

In conclusion- I am officially sick of Cooper.
He's tried this lineup shuffling bullshit (Phil Garner style), tried to be aggressive with base stealing (but it has backfired numerous times),
and has made some puzzling decisions that have made me lose faith in him.

I will be clear that I do not think that our losing record is his solely his fault.
It is definitely a team failure coupled with a few baffling decisions peppered in here and there.

P.S.

Dear Ed Wade (Astros GM),

IT'S THE PITCHING, STUPID.
